Turning Miles Into Meaning: Why Rock Recovery Matters in Arlington
Blog Post by Contributing Editor Cortney Weber, Race Director of the Arlington Turkey Trot
As Race Director of the Arlington Turkey Trot, I have the privilege of working alongside many impactful nonprofits in our community. Each year, we support organizations doing meaningful, often life-changing work. But every once in a while, a partnership becomes something more personal.
For me, that’s Rock Recovery.
Rock Recovery was a beneficiary of the Arlington Turkey Trot for six years, and I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with their team for the past four. During that time, I’ve seen firsthand the compassion, dedication, and thoughtfulness they bring to every person they serve. The staff is exceptional, not only in their expertise, but in the way they show up with empathy, patience, and genuine care.
What stands out most to me about Rock Recovery is the way they approach healing. Their work goes beyond treatment. They are building a community where individuals feel seen, supported, and not alone as they navigate recovery from disordered eating.
As a parent of both a middle schooler and a high schooler in Arlington Public Schools, this work feels especially meaningful. Rock Recovery has a presence in local schools to support students’ social and emotional well-being, offering resources, education, and early intervention during a time when young people are navigating so much.
At the same time, I’ve come to recognize an important gap.
Many of the teachers and staff in our school system don’t live in Arlington. They care deeply about the students they support, but they may not always be aware of the full network of local resources available to them. That’s where I’ve chosen to lean in most.
Through my work with the Turkey Trot and Local Focus, I’ve made it a priority to help raise awareness about Rock Recovery. Because no one facing disordered eating should have to struggle in silence. Help is available. It’s local. And it’s grounded in compassion and expertise.
The Arlington Turkey Trot has always been about more than a race. It’s about a community coming together to support one another. Being able to contribute to organizations like Rock Recovery is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people show up with intention.
I’m grateful for the work Rock Recovery continues to do in Arlington and beyond, and for the opportunity to play even a small role in helping connect more people to the support they provide.
Because sometimes, the most important step is simply knowing help exists.
